PUBLIC REQUEST FOR INFO ON TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO’S LEGEND CHAMPA DEVI

In am in the process of writing an in-depth portrait of the trail blazing, legendary singer dancer Fatima who was fondly known by her stage name ‘Champa Devi’. Born in 1923 she went to greener pastures in 2001. For over three decades ( 1930s to the 1960s) Champa was a trail blazer for the Indian performing arts of music and dance in Trinidad, Guyana and Suriname. She was a pioneer in our national identity formation and cultural development.

This year 2020, marks the 100th year of the formal end of Indian contract labour to the Caribbean . Champa’s contribution requires highlighting. In this regard I would like to get information, or speak with anyone, who has either known Champa, has any anecdotal information or is willing to share photos, flyers or posters of her life and performances in Trinidad, Guyana or Suriname and anywhere else. Also advise if any info provided is copyrighted.

Information received will supplement what I already have, having known and done many interviews with the late Champa. I am also trying to locate her daughter Patricia, who I am advised, lives in Canada. Please assist me in locating her. Any information provided will be publicly acknowledged in the article.

I can be reached at Satbalkaransingh@gmail.com or tel (What app) 1-868-789-3609.

Thanks in advance for your contribution to this venture .
